The first thing I'd like to say is that's great
news!
It really is. Songwriting is an exhilarating, rewarding and incredibly
fun thing to do. It can be the reason to get up in the morning, it can
be the perfect way to put across your ideas, or it can be the perfect
hobby. Whatever songwriting is to you - or whatever you'd like it to
become - I'd just like to let you know that I'm thrilled your 'hopping
on board'.
Now, a different writer might just use this moment to say something like
'It'll be a bumpy ride', or perhaps 'Let's hope the waves don't crash
the boat'...but that would be too pessimistic, and anyway, what's the
use in an article to put you off this most beautiful thing?
Because songwriting truly is beautiful. Name me anything else which has
the power to move people, make them laugh, sing, cry or dance...there's
nothing in the world as powerful as song.
So, I'd like to take this opportunity to say this: Don't ever let anyone
put you off.
I've read quite a few warning articles in my time:
'Songwriting isn't a true profession' - excuse me, but what's a more
valid profession than writing something which will truly last forever? A
piece of art which can mean different things to different people the
world over?
'You'll never get rich from writing songs' - Who wants to get rich
anyway? Oh, and if you do, then ever heard of Elton John? Paul Simon?
Britney Spears...?
'Only the luckiest 0.0001 % make a living' - Two things here: Firstly, I
believe we make our own luck in this world. The more you put into your
songwriting, the luckier you will become. Secondly, far more people make
a living from writing songs than just the people you hear on the radio.
I write personalized songs, for
instance...and am as happy as pie (which is quite an odd phrase,
actually.)
Don't let these crock warnings ever put you off. Yes, you might not
become famous. Perhaps you'll never make a million from that one 'hit'
song. But then again, perhaps you will. Who are we to say?
It really doesn't matter, at the end of the day. All that matters is
that you write songs, continue to write songs, and enjoy writing songs.
So you want to be a songwriter...?
Hop on board, my friend - it's going to be great.
